RADIO SUTCH - DJ'S
Here's about 60 minutes of Radio Sutch from June 1964....featuring DJ's Brian Paull and Reg Calvert David 'Screaming Lord' Sutch was an outstanding and totally eccentric singer, who, along with his backing band, 'The Raving Savages' wowed audiences all over the UK and Europe in the early 60's. When on a break from touring, he listened to offshore pirate station Radio Caroline, and it occured to him that even though Caroline was playing pop music, it was targeted at an older audience. He then set about putting his own radio station on air. In May 1964, Sutch and his band sailed to the Thames Estuary on a 60ft fishing boat, the 'Cornucopia', with the idea of setting up Radio Sutch from the vessel. Whilst at sea he came across the Shivering Sands wartime fort, and moved all of his radio equipment on board. Shortly afterwards, Britains first 'Teenage Station' began broadcasting.....The on air sound was totally different to Caroline...Sometimes the DJ's would play whole sides of LP's without introduction, and at other times, Sutch went on air and read passages from banned books of the day, such as "Fanny Hill" and "Lady Chatterley's Lover"...Sutch played his own songs, and tried to plug unknown artists.....Broadcasts were also sporadic, as the stations transmitter was powered by several large batteries which frequently needed charging. Here is a CD recording of DJ's Brian Paull (real name Brian Poole), David Sutch's road manager, and the later owner of the station Reg Calvert, playing hits of the day, and telling listeners how to join the 'Fortunes' fan club. Both the Fortunes and David Sutch were managed by Calvert who tried to promote their songs on the station....When Sutch went back on the road touring with his band he sold the station To Calvert who renamed it Radio City. The sound quality is reasonably good considering the very basic equipment used by Radio Sutch, but please don't expect crystal clarity from a recording made over 40 years ago......

Here's about 60 minutes of Radio Sutch from August 1964....featuring David Sutch himself David 'Screaming Lord' Sutch was an outstanding and completely eccentric singer, who, along with his backing band, 'The Raving Savages' wowed audiences all over the UK in the early 60's. Sutch's act normally began with the band bringing a large coffin onto the stage. Sutch would emerge covered in fake blood, and throw large pieces of raw liver and handfuls of live maggots into the audience. It was not uncommon for girls in the front rows to faint, and the show would spiral into total anarchy. When on a break from touring, he listened to offshore pirate station Radio Caroline, and it occurred to him that even though Caroline was playing pop music, it was targeted at an older age group. He then set about putting his own radio station on air. In mid 1964, Sutch and his band set off from the Port of London, sailing to the Thames Estuary on a 60ft fishing boat, the 'Cornucopia', but found that the boat was totally unsuitable for it's new role. Whilst out at sea he came across the Shivering Sands wartime fort, and moved all of his radio equipment on board.
